Leroy Heers

Visual Artist

I recognise the Gubbi Gubbi as the traditional custodians of this land on which I live. I pay my deep respects to the elders who nurtured this country since time immemorial. And I extend my humblest respects to all of the original people of this island home known as Australia.

I am exploring the fusion of historical tastes and techniques with a modern and forward thinking approach in my Art. Art captivates us and imparts a sense of what it means to be human, broadening our understanding of the world and our own place within it.

My heritage is European, my forefathers were Prussian and Irish. In some of the works you will see that I use Christian icons and symbols which is part of my ancestral culture.

I have been practicing art since I started attending private art classes at 13 years of age. However it was as an adult in the early nineties that I seriously dedicated my life to making art. Particularly interested in the dry desert landscape, I arrived in Alice Springs with paint and brushes anxious to absorb the ancient landscape and to broaden my artistic endeavours.

For work I stretched and primed canvas’ for the aboriginal artists at a local gallery. I often “went bush” with the Warlpiri artists and their families. It was not for art and painting, it was for bush tucker, family and learning. And it was these people who nurtured and included me, offering me the opportunity to learn the deep spiritual significance of the country.

During my time in Alice Springs, I studied fine art at the Centralian college which is an annex of Deakin university. I completed a double major in Applied art and Media production. I held 3 solo exhibitions and worked at the Aboriginal television station Impaja, as a studio floor manager.

After seven years in Alice Springs, I moved to Melbourne to further my studies in the arts and multimedia while I continued working in the film and television industry as a cinematographer. In Melbourne I collaborated in numerous group art exhibitions, produced private commissioned artworks and held six solo art exhibitions in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Living now in south eastern Queensland, I continue to explore numerous themes that concern me and my environment through artistic expression. I still produce commission artworks and hold exhibitions from time to time. Below is a small selection of my wide range of styles, techniques and concepts.
